Muriatic acid is another heavy-duty cleaner used in pool cleaning to balance pH. It Is also effective in removing various stains, including rust stains on concrete driveways. The acid is pretty strong hence must be diluted before application to avoid damaging the driveway. When diluting the acid, it’s best to determine whether the solution is for heavy or light cleaning. If the latter, add 6-7 ounces of muriatic acid to a gallon of water, but if doing heavy cleaning, add 3 ounces of the acid to a gallon of water.
To remove rust stains from concrete with muriatic acid, start by washing the area with a garden hose. Then dilute the acid and spray it on the entire pad of concrete. Allow it to sit for some minutes; then pressure wash the area. Hoses with 15 or 25-degree nozzles are the best for this application.
When using muriatic acid, avoid spot cleaning the driveway because the concrete will appear brighter than the rest of the driveway. In fact, one of the uses of this acid is to brighten concrete. Also, personal safety is necessary because the acid is pretty strong. Wear protective gear like gloves, glasses, and a mask to avoid inhaling the toxic fumes. I’m also careful to water any landscaping and plants nearby to keep their cells hydrated; otherwise, they dry out once they come into contact with the acid.

CLR is specially formulated to remove lime, calcium, and rust stains in bathroom porcelain and tile, dishwashers, toilets, showerheads, fiberglass, and other surfaces. CLR also indicates that the solution is safe for use on concrete because it doesn’t contain phosphates. The main ingredients in CLR include lactic acid, water, and gluconic acid, which are pretty effective at removing rust stains from concrete.
To remove rust stains from concrete with CLR, clean the surface with soap and water and allow it to dry. Then spot test a small area before spraying the solution on the stain. If there are no adverse reactions, apply CLR to the stain and let it sit for a few minutes. Then rinse and leave it to dry.
