This is only one of the many different options available for cleaning an oven rack. You may find that there are other options that work better for you and we have a number of them listed below.

There are also things you need to know before you begin doing this type of work. Not only is it something that can damage the racks if you aren’t careful, you might also find that you’re putting your health in danger as well.

That is why a careful consideration of all things involved is important. Will take a look at a few of those important items as well as some of the different options for cleaning oven racks that can work well in almost any situation.

What Can You Use To Clean Oven Racks/Shelves/Tray?

As we discussed, you can use vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, and water to clean oven racks. There may also be a wide variety of other items, some of which come with heavy-duty fumes.

For example, if you were to use some commercial products for cleaning the racks, you might find that it is best to do so in an area with plenty of ventilation. Why is that necessary?

First of all, the fumes can be harmful to our health if we breathe them indirectly. We may be able to handle some if we are in a ventilated area but too much can be harmful and can easily overtake us. This may even be true of some natural cleansers.

We also want to ensure that we aren’t leaving an unpleasant smell in the home when we clean the oven racks, trays, or shelves. That unpleasant smell can linger for days at times and is more of a reminder of what we had to do rather than simply enjoying the work that we did.

You should also be cautious about trying to clean your oven racks using a self-cleaning oven. This is a mistake that far too many homeowners make.

Oven racks were made to stand up to high temperatures. That is why we can easily cook in a 400° oven without damaging them.

When you use the self-cleaning function of many ovens, however, the temperature can be significantly higher than what is used for cooking. At times, it may even triple the temperature, which is far too much for a typical oven rack.

As a result of the high temperature, you will find that the metal has been discolored and the shine is gone. In addition, the racks will not slide in and out of the oven as easily because you have damaged the coating that makes it do so.

So, what do you do if you accidentally leave the racks in when cleaning your oven? If you act quickly, you may be able to deal with the situation effectively.

Use fine steel wool to wipe the tracks and the guides, as that may help to bring back some of the lubrication. Just make sure that the pad is soapy so that it doesn’t damage the rack or track.

One thing that you can do is to use a steam clean option. This is something that is built into many new ovens, and it works very well for cleaning the interior. You can leave the racks inside and allow it to do the work for you. It’s not always an option, but if it is available it is one that should be considered.

Let’s take a look now at some of the commercial cleaners and natural cleaners that can be used for oven racks and trays.

If you have damaged the oven rack and it has become discolored because you kept it in the oven while self-cleaning, it may not be damaged permanently. It can damage the finish because of the high temperature but if you act quickly, you may be able to get the shine back.

The best way to get the shine back is to take a bottle of white vinegar and lightly spray the outside of the oven rack. You can also add some baking soda by sprinkling it over the rack to cover it.

Use a cloth to wipe the paste back and forth and eventually, use a bristle brush to clean it more thoroughly. It may take some work but some of the original shine may come back to the oven rack by using this method.

Another problem that you may experience is with the rack not sliding as easily as it did before. This is also something that can get damaged when you use the self-cleaning feature on an oven. How do you deal with it?

As soon as possible after you notice that the problem occurred, get a fine Brillo pad and begin rubbing the edge of the rack as well as the inside of the track. Make sure that plenty of soap is used on the Brillo pad so that you don’t scratch the surface and cause additional damage.

You should never expect the oven rack to come back to its original condition. In fact, it is more likely that you will eventually spend a few dollars to replace it. That’s perfectly okay.

If you are on a budget and would like to try to clean it, however, you can make some progress but don’t expect miracles. Some of the damage that occurs as a result of the extremely high heat during the self-cleaning process is irreversible.

Almost any product that cleans aluminum or other items in the kitchen can be used to clean oven racks. They are a relatively heavy-duty item that can stand up to some abuse during the cleaning process.

In fact, aside from the possibility that you may damage them if using a self-cleaning feature in the oven, there is not much you can do to damage them further. The real key is to find a product that is going to soften the debris on the oven rack so that it wipes away cleanly.

Don’t get bogged down in the minutiae. Clean it as good as you can, removing the large pieces of debris and cleaning the smaller pieces when possible. The rest is just going to be there and adds to the character of the oven.
