When the stains on clothes become too stubborn for simple detergent, people tend to bring out the big guns, i.e. using bleach to do the nasty job. Being an effective cleanser for clothes, can it also be used to clean other products, say toothbrushes?

If you are looking for a readily available, strong cleaning agent to clean your toothbrush, then bleach is a perfect choice. The antibacterial and disinfectant properties of bleach make it a viable toothbrush cleaner that effectively removes all germs that could be a threat to your oral hygiene.

Due to the pandemic, I had an abundance of rubbing alcohol lying around. I used to clean every potentially contaminated surface with it, and when I made my way to the bathroom with the alcohol in hand, it made me wonder whether I can clean my toothbrush with it too?

I use vinegar not only as a condiment but also as a cleaner for removing rust from various surfaces and appliances in my house. Since it is such an effective cleaner, it raised the question in my head whether it can be used to clean toothbrushes too?

If you are a baking fanatic like me, you must have a plethora of baking soda lying around in your kitchen. As such – to make good use of it – I decided to test it on different dirty objects that needed cleaning, including my toothbrush.

I use mouthwash regularly as a part of my oral hygiene routine, and it made me wonder whether I can use it to clean my toothbrush and retainers among other dental products?

Mouthwash is an effective solution to completely cleanse your toothbrush of any germs and bacteria. Apart from its anti-bacterial properties, mouthwash cannot cause you any irritation if it’s left on the toothbrush, as it is originally for cleaning your mouth from the inside.

All denture tablets can be used to effectively clean your toothbrush, amongst other things. These tablets are known to kill 99.9% of bacteria, and completely disinfect the item they are used for. Not to mention, they are safe to use as they are made for dentures originally, so they don’t possess any harmful chemicals.

Apart from using effective cleaning agents like mouthwash, denture tablets, and vinegar, you need to use the correct technique to make sure any instances of bacteria and germs are removed from your toothbrush. Also, remember to thoroughly rinse your toothbrush later to remove any residue of the cleaning agent.

Keep Your Toothbrush Clean

Here are some do’s and don’ts you should keep in mind while on the mission of cleaning your toothbrush of germs and bacteria:

  • Always rinse your toothbrush after you use it. When you have rinsed it properly, store it in a container and let it air dry.
  • Disinfect and deep cleanse your toothbrush using either of the methods listed above at least once a week to prevent any accumulation of germs.
  • Avoid keeping your brush in a closed container as that could lead to the buildup of germs.
  • Change your toothbrush every three months or when its bristles start to fray.
